Whitby, on the North Yorkshire Coast is synonymous with ‘Fish and Chips'. Quite rightly so, as is evidenced by visitors from all over the country and, indeed, from further a field, visiting especially for this ‘delicacy'.
This picturesque port with its maritime history, has, over centuries, been famous for its fishing fleet and the ships sailing from here. Its situation, at the mouth of the River Esk in a natural harbour, is the ideal location for this industry. Unfortunately, over the last few years there has been a marked decline in the number of full time fishing vessels.
Primarily known for its fresh fish landings, it is not the only catch. Whitby scampi can be found almost anywhere on a menu. Sadly, with the decline of the fishing fleet, the shellfish is landed elsewhere and brought here to
Places to Eat in Whitby.
Numerous
Whitby Cafes are situated around the town with a range of sizes and varieties of menu. Day trippers and coach parties are a highly established source of revenue for the local cafes, particularly so when offering reasonably priced menus. Many of these cafes are positioned near to the harbour in close proximity to the coach drop-off points. Hardly described as ‘cheap and cheerful', these establishments offer an important service to the town and its tourism.
A few of the local cafes will even open at 5.30 in the morning to cater to the morning fishermen and other early risers, supplying a welcome full English breakfast and hot drink. In addition, they can often supply packed lunches to sustain the fishing fraternity on the piers and beaches throughout the day.
Some rather well-known cafes are always linked to seafood. Some meat dishes may be on offer but fair to say, the diners visiting there are there primarily for the seafood and fish dishes! Some restaurants are proud to advertise the fact that they are ‘fish and chip' shops. They are invariably set around the harbour side and/or near to the Whitby Sing Bridge displaying their menus in the time honoured tradition of ‘Fish, Chips, peas, bread and butter and a pot of tea all for only £ (price of the day)
Not all the cafes sell the expected menu choice of food, in fact, some cafes have made an appearance of late which only supply ice-cream, chocolate and solely confectionery. Not as one would think the preserve of children, all ages appear to gravitate to these little luxuries. Individually designed themed cafes are making an appearance over the last decade, appealing to the visitor with perhaps a little more spending power and those looking for a little something ‘different'.Understandably when considering the design and furnishings.
Finally but not at all the least, are the contemporary cafes. Steamlined and modern they are in keeping with the larger city cafes which is perhaps why they are popular with many of the ‘out of towners' familiar with such surroundings. Perhaps the visiting clientele of such cafes feel at home with the contemporary style of their surroundings but for others, the appeal of the smaller café format is part of the appeal of the town of Whitby.
From all the choices available it would appear that there is a café to suit all budgets and a café to suit every kind of particular taste. The locals and visitors alike obviously enjoy the different styles of choice available as evidenced by the continuing success of each and every establishment in this ever popular tourist town of Whitby in the County of North Yorkshire. Be it seafood, fish and chips, chocolate, full English breakfast or fast food, the choice is immense. As the popularity of Whitby has increased over the years, the number of cafes and the opening times throughout the year have increased making it a popular resort all the year round.
